The grading ladder

Three letters, one functional standard

The letter on a listing describes how a device looks, never how it works. Everything we sell passes the same functional suite before it gets a grade at all.

Grade A — as new to the eye

Cosmetic standard
No visible marks under a 45 cm inspection at normal room lighting. Glass, frame and rear panel free of dents, dings and lens scuffs.
Functional standard
Every subsystem passes: touch digitiser, speakers, microphones, all cameras, haptics, biometrics, cellular and Wi-Fi radios. Battery health at or above 90 per cent of rated design capacity.
In the box
Device, a new certified charging cable, a compliant power adapter where the model shipped with one, a printed grading report and the data-erasure certificate.

Grade B — light honest wear

Cosmetic standard
Micro-scratches or light edge wear visible when you tilt the device to the light. Nothing that breaks a coating, nothing you feel with a fingernail on the display glass.
Functional standard
Full functional pass, identical to Grade A. Battery health at or above 85 per cent, or a new cell fitted before listing if the pack falls below that line.
In the box
Device, a new certified charging cable, a printed grading report and the data-erasure certificate. Adapters supplied on request.

Grade C — used and photographed

Cosmetic standard
Visible scratches, scuffs or a small dent that we photograph individually. Every Grade C listing carries images of its own actual marks, not a stock render.
Functional standard
Full functional pass on every subsystem we test. Cosmetics are the only reason the letter is lower. Battery health at or above 85 per cent.
In the box
Device, a new certified charging cable, a printed grading report and the data-erasure certificate.

How the test bench works

Five stages, in this order, every time

The same pipeline runs whether a device arrives as a review sample, a trade-in or a pallet from a partner refurbisher.

Intake

The unit is booked in against a serial or IMEI, photographed on all six faces, and quarantined until ownership and blacklist checks clear.

Diagnostics

An automated pass exercises the digitiser, sensors, radios, cameras, speakers and charging circuit, then dumps the raw battery and thermal telemetry.

Measured tests

Anything that gets a published number goes to the bench: colorimeter, load rig, acoustic coupler, drain run. Instruments before impressions.

Grading

A second technician who did not do the diagnostics assigns the cosmetic letter, so the person who repaired a device never grades it.

Listing

The report, the actual photographs and the warranty terms are attached to the listing. If a figure is not in the report, it does not appear in the copy.

Where we draw the line

What we will not do

NeverWe do not sell placements. No manufacturer has ever paid to appear in a review, a round-up or a recommendation, and none ever will.

NeverWe do not publish a score without a measurement behind it. If the bench could not measure it, the article says so in plain words instead.

NeverWe do not run undisclosed affiliate links. Where a link earns us anything, the sentence next to it tells you so before you click.

Marketplace assurances

What comes with every graded device

These four apply to every listing, at every grade, with no upgrade tier and no extra fee.

12 months

Parts-and-labour warranty

Every graded device carries a twelve-month warranty on parts and labour from the delivery date, transferable if you resell or gift it.

30 days

No-reason return window

Thirty days to change your mind, with return shipping covered. We inspect and re-grade returns before they go back on the shelf.

Certified

Verified data erasure

Storage is erased to a documented standard, verified by a second read pass, and the certificate is filed with the device serial.

Checked

IMEI and blacklist screening

Cellular devices are screened against carrier blocklists at intake and again on the morning they ship.

Reader voices

Unedited, first names only

We publish notes as they were written, with the sender's permission and without a rating attached. We do not collect star scores, so we do not quote any.

I bought a Grade C laptop expecting to be disappointed by the photos and instead the marks were exactly where the listing said they were. That is a low bar and almost nobody clears it.

Devon, small-business buyer

The battery report was the thing. I could see the measured capacity, the date it was measured and the threshold they use, instead of a green tick with nothing behind it.

Priya, reader since the first newsletter

I traded in three old phones. The revised quote came in eleven dollars under the estimate with a note explaining the corner dent. Fine by me — it was honest and it took four days.

Frequently asked

Questions we get every week

Is a refurbished device the same as a used one?

Not in our vocabulary. A used device is sold as it was received. A refurbished device has been through intake, diagnostics, any repair the diagnostics call for, a functional re-test and an independent cosmetic grade. The difference is the process and the paperwork: a refurbished unit from us arrives with a grading report that lists what was tested, what was replaced and what the battery measured.

What does the grade letter actually cover?

The letter describes cosmetics only. Grade A, B and C devices all have to pass the same functional test suite — there is no such thing as a device we grade C because a camera is soft. Anything that fails a functional test is either repaired and re-tested or removed from sale and stripped for parts under our WEEE obligations.

How is battery health measured?

We read the pack telemetry for design capacity, full-charge capacity and cycle count, then run a controlled drain under a fixed workload to confirm the reported figure is not drifting. The measured percentage and the date of the measurement go on the report. Below 85 per cent, the cell is replaced before the device is listed.

Do you accept payment or free products from manufacturers for reviews?

No. Review units are bought at retail or borrowed on terms that place no conditions on the copy, and loaned hardware is returned. Where an article links to a device we happen to sell, that is disclosed in the article. The editorial team does not see marketplace revenue figures and marketplace staff do not see draft verdicts.

What happens to my data when I trade a device in?

Sign out of your accounts and remove any activation lock before shipping — we cannot process a locked device and will return it. On arrival, storage is erased to a documented standard, verified with a second read pass, and a certificate is issued against the serial number. Devices that cannot be erased are physically destroyed and the destruction is logged.

Can I get a device repaired if I did not buy it from you?

Yes, through the Repair & Parts programme. We quote before we open anything, tell you whether the part will be OEM or a matched aftermarket component, and warn you in advance if the model uses part pairing that will trigger a warning message after a replacement.

Where are you based and can I visit?

Our office and bench are at 1500 Broadway, Suite 450, New York. We are not a walk-in shop, but bench tours run by appointment for readers, trade partners and journalists — write to info@gadgetarenafox.com and we will find a slot.

Next step

Read the method, then buy the device

Start with the test-bench programme if you want to know how the numbers are produced, or go straight to the grading ladder if you already know which letter suits your budget. Either way, nothing is hidden behind a login.
